Investigation Licensed casinos in Great Britain

Who Really Runs Britain's Licensed Casino Sites? Six Brands Checked Against the Register

Behind every casino brand is a licensed company that holds your money, keeps your data and answers your complaints. We traced six of them on the Gambling Commission register, read their terms and safety pages, and set out plainly what each is best for — and what to check before you sign up.

This article contains advertising: links to casinos are affiliate links (how we are paid). 18+ only · GambleAware.org

The short version

  • All 6 casinos are run by different companies, and every casino licence was active on the Gambling Commission register on 30 September 2026.
  • The register records regulatory action against WHG (International) Limited (William Hill). The licence is still active; we explain what that means below.
  • For PlayOJO and Betway, we could not confirm some UK pages through our sources, and we say exactly which ones.
  • We do not score casinos out of five. Each gets a plain-English level on six criteria and a “best for” label.
  • No bonus offers and no promises about how quickly you will be paid — those change, and depend on you, your payment method and your bank.

Casino brands are marketing names. The organisation that actually matters to you is the company named on the Gambling Commission's public register: it signs the contract you accept when you open an account, it holds your balance, it decides on your withdrawals and it is the one your complaint goes to. Several brands can sit under one company, and a brand can move from one company to another — as happened with two of the six casinos in this article in the past two years.

That is why each profile below starts with the licence holder, the country where it is registered and its account number, linked straight to the register. The register entry also lists every web address the company has declared, so you can check that the site in your browser really belongs to it. Copycat sites sometimes borrow a familiar name; a domain that is not on the list is a reason to stop.

The same entry shows whether the regulator has taken action against the company — a warning, extra licence conditions or a financial penalty. A sanction does not mean the licence has gone, and a clean record does not prove good service, but both are part of the picture, so we report them. If you do run into a problem, the route is the same at every casino here: complain to the operator first; should eight weeks pass without a resolution, take it to the free, independent dispute service named in the operator's terms; and you can report concerns to the Gambling Commission, which uses them in its supervision work.

The Six Casinos, One by One

The order below follows our published method: casinos with fewer gaps — criteria we rate Limited or could not confirm — come first, then those with more Strong levels. As our advertising page explains, commercial arrangements can influence which licensed casinos we cover and the order they appear in; they never change what we write about them.

Rules Every One of Them Has to Follow

Whatever the brand, a casino licensed for Great Britain works inside the same rulebook. Knowing the main rules makes it easier to spot when something is not right.

  • Age and identity checks come first. A licensed casino has to verify your age and identity before you can play, so expect to be asked for details — and sometimes documents — when you register.
  • A deposit limit at sign-up. Since 31 October 2025, new customers are asked to set a deposit limit before their first deposit. Lowering a limit is straightforward; raising one can involve a cooling-off period — William Hill, for example, applies 24 hours.
  • Stake limits on online slots. Since April 2025 the maximum stake per spin is £5, and since May 2025 it is £2 for players aged 18 to 24.
  • No credit cards. Credit cards have been banned for gambling since 14 April 2020. Debit cards, bank payments and e-wallets are used instead.
  • A withdrawal request is final. UK rules stop casinos from letting you reverse a withdrawal to keep playing.
  • Bonus terms are capped. Since 19 January 2026, wagering requirements on casino bonuses cannot exceed ten times the bonus, and offers mixing casino and betting are not allowed. We still do not list offers.
  • GamStop covers them all. Every online casino licensed for Great Britain has to take part in GamStop, so one free registration blocks all of them for six months, one year or five years.

How We Put This Together

We did not open accounts, deposit or play at these casinos to write this article, and we do not claim to have done so. Everything above comes from sources you can check: the Gambling Commission register, and each operator's own UK terms, help centre and safer gambling pages, read on or shortly before 30 September 2026. Where we could not read a page through our sources, we say “not confirmed” rather than guess. The criteria and levels are explained on How we assess casinos, and the way the site is funded is set out on our advertising page. Spot something out of date? Email [email protected].
